William H. Hodgson, né le 15 novembre 1877 à Blackmore et mort le 19 avril 1918 en Belgique, est un écrivain anglais réputé pour ses nouvelles et ses romans fantastiques. La porte du monstre : Carnacky, le célèbre détective des mystères, spécialisé dans la recherche des fantômes, se rend chez un riche propriétaire dont la propriété est hantée. C'est l'intrigue où Hodgson nous plonge, un récit court, tenu et au suspens étonnant. Carnacki a accepté d'aller étudier un problème de maison hantée dans une demeure peu éloignée de Londres. Trois personnes y ont trouvé la mort un siècle et demi plus tôt, étranglées dans la chambre grise. Toutes les nuits, la porte de cette chambre, bien que fermée à clef, s'ouvre et se referme brutalement et on y ressent une présence hostile. Après avoir constaté ces faits, Carnacki va devoir user de toute sa connaissance et sa science de la lutte contre les revenants pour résoudre cet angoissant problème et faire en sorte que cet esprit puissant disparaisse. / Le dernier voyage :"Le Shamraken, navire à voiles, en avait passé des jours sur les mers..." 60 ans de navigation, l'équipage composé de vieillards s'en retourne à terre.
