A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1597.
It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals), who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set.
The play consists of four interconnecting plots, connected by a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta, which is set simultaneously in the woodland and in the realm of Fairyland, under the light of the moon.
The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.

His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.
In 2016, celebrations will commence in the United Kingdom and across the world to honour The Bard's 400th anniversary.

William Shakespearen syntymäpäivästä ei ole säilynyt tarkkaa tietoa, mutta hänet kastettiin synnyinkaupungissaan Stratford-on-Avonissa 26.4.1564 oletettavasti muutaman päivän ikäisenä, ja hänen merkkipäivänään pidetään yleisesti huhtikuun 23:tta. Ensimmäinen Shakespearen kirjoittamaksi tiedetty näytelmä on vuonna1592 esitetty Henrik VI. Shakespeare kuului myös teatteriseurueisiin ja oli yksi Globe-teatterin omistajista. Todennäköisesti viimeinen näytelmä on 1611 ensiesityksensä saanut Myrsky, mutta senkin jälkeen hän kirjoitti muutamia näytelmiä yhteistyössä toisten näytelmäkirjailijoiden kanssa. 1610-luvulla hän jätti Lontoon ja teatterin ja vetäytyi Stratfordiin, missä hän kuoli 52-vuotiaana 23.4.1616.
