Tietoa kirjasta

Chester Farrell has done everything right and still ended up trapped. Three years on Mars have wrung him dry, and the only thing standing between him and his family is the price of leaving a planet designed to keep workers from ever going home. When violence finds him on the edge of escape, he offers a deal that seems reckless, impossible, and dangerously clever.

What follows is not a contest of strength, but a test of understanding. In a shadowed Martian settlement, Farrell enters a game built on alien rules, where loss is measured in sensation rather than money. Each move tightens the pressure, not just on the wager, but on the fragile assumptions Earthmen bring with them. The danger is constant, the threat immediate, and the cost of misjudgment brutally clear.

Alien Equivalent unfolds with quiet tension and sharp logic, letting the situation do the work instead of speeches or explanations. The story forces its characters into a corner where intelligence matters more than force, and where escape depends on recognizing what another species truly values. Farrell’s problem isn’t winning the game. It’s surviving the meaning of the stakes once the rules are enforced.

Richard R. Smith’s fiction appeared during the boom years of magazine science fiction, often focusing on human vulnerability when confronted with nonhuman systems that don’t bend to familiar expectations. In Alien Equivalent, Smith strips the scenario down to essentials: one man, one debt, and a culture that measures loss in a way Earthmen never learned to fear. The result is a tight, unsettling story that earns its final moment by refusing to soften the price of misunderstanding.
