Intialaiset antoivat Gandhille nimen ”Mahatma”, suuri sielu. Hänessä ikivanha perinne yhtyi radikaaliin muutokseen. Gandhi-teoksessa Suomen merkittävin gandhilaisuuden tuntija Unto Tähtinen esittelee Gandhin keskeiset ajatukset. Hän valottaa Gandhin suhdetta uskontoon ja moraaliin, väkivallan ongelmaan, yhteiskunnallisen muutoksen keinoihin, totuuteen, väkivallattomaan vastarintaan ja suoraan toimintaan. Klassikoksi muodostunut teos julkaistiin enismmäisen kerran jo vuonna 1970 nimellä Mitä Gandhi todella sanoi. Unto Tähtinen on filosofian tohtori, joka matkusti Intiaan vuonna 1954 mukanaan vain "matkalippu ja 60 puntaa rahaa ja päätös olla siellä muutaman vuoden". Intiassa Tähtinen opiskeli Hindu-yliopistossa ja sai Gandhin muistosäätiön stipendin tutkimustyöhönsä. Myöhemmin hänestä tuli Helsingin yliopiston intialaisen uskontofilosofian dosentti.
