La Pietra di Luna: Un romanzo giallo

"La pietra di luna" è spesso considerato il primo grande romanzo poliziesco inglese. Unisce mistero, molteplici punti di vista narrativi, critica sociale e profondità psicologica in una storia che ruota attorno a un diamante indiano rubato e alle conseguenze del saccheggio coloniale. Il romanzo inizia con la storia della pietra di luna, un sacro diamante giallo rubato da un tempio indiano nel 1799 durante l'attacco britannico a Seringapatam. Il colonnello John Herncastle porta la gemma in Inghilterra, portando con sé una maledizione e la sete di vendetta di tre sacerdoti bramini che hanno giurato di recuperarla. Decenni dopo, Herncastle regala la pietra di luna a sua nipote, Rachel Verinder, per il suo diciottesimo compleanno. Quella stessa notte, il diamante scompare dalla sua stanza…
