Sherlock Holmes hizo mundialmente famoso a Conan Doyle casi desde el principio de su carrera literaria; pero las obras que él más apreció, entre todas las suyas, aquellas de las que se sentía más orgulloso como escritor, fueron las de carácter histórico centradas en la Edad Media (Sir Nigel) y en el periodo napoleónico (El Brigadier Gerard), que han hecho las delicias de varias generaciones de lectores. También guardó siempre un especial aprecio a Micah Clarke (1889), su primera y del todo desconocida incursión en este género, que recrea muy fiel y muy brillantemente una oscura rebelión de carácter dinástico y religioso (La Rebelión de Monmouth de 1685) contra uno de los últimos Estuardo, James II. Una pequeña joya que no decepcionará a ningún lector de Conan Doyle o que ame las novelas históricas que son a la vez excelentes y emocionantes novelas de aventuras.
