The Metamorphosis

The most famous of Franz Kafka's works, The Metamorphosis describes a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, who wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant insect. This change in his condition does not surprise or shock his family, rather, they look on it as an impending burden. Subtexts include how society's perceptions of differences, the loneliness of isolation, and the absurdity of the human condition. The Metamorphosis is often cited as one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century and is widely studied in colleges and universities across the western world.

I can hardly say how efficiently this book made me loathe everything around me and thrust me into abject psychological misery. There is a reason entire academic careers are spent studying this little 70 page novella. This damnable thing made by a very damned man oozes meaning and questions out of every pore of the monstrous vermin. I have a habit of always getting at least a bit of a headache reading Kafka; this one however was totally worth it. If only all authors could produce at least one work a fifth as good as the metamorphosis, no classics list would take less than a terabyte of space. Kafka was a genius and this work is the exemplary work of hist beautifully disturbing and familiarly bizarre style.
