The daughter of an English bishop, let out alone for once, slips off on a cheap tour to Lucerne, accepts a German pastor she has known a week, and discovers what a Prussian country parish expects of a wife. Von Arnim had married a Prussian count herself and wrote the East Prussian flatlands, the farming and the steady pregnancies from inside; the comedy is sharp and the ending is not a comfortable one.
