William Shakespearen syntymäpäivästä ei ole säilynyt tarkkaa tietoa, mutta hänet kastettiin synnyinkaupungissaan Stratford-on-Avonissa 26.4.1564 oletettavasti muutaman päivän ikäisenä, ja hänen merkkipäivänään pidetään yleisesti huhtikuun 23:tta. Todennäköisesti viimeinen näytelmä on 1611 ensiesityksensä saanut Myrsky, mutta senkin jälkeen hän kirjoitti muutamia näytelmiä yhteistyössä toisten näytelmäkirjailijoiden kanssa. 1610-luvulla hän jätti Lontoon ja teatterin ja vetäytyi Stratfordiin, missä hän kuoli 52-vuotiaana 23.4.1616.
