Wade Brackett is not an ordinary lawman. He is a stock detective—a hired tracker who follows stolen cattle, identifies altered brands, and brings rustlers to justice across the open range.

Working for the powerful Arizona Cattlemen's Association, Wade has earned a reputation for finding men who do not want to be found. He is patient, deadly with a rifle, and more comfortable alone in the mountains than inside any town. Ranchers praise him as a hero, while small cattlemen fear he has become the private gun of wealthy cattle barons.

Wade's latest assignment sends him to the isolated town of Shadow Creek, where hundreds of cattle have vanished from the Bar-C Ranch. The evidence points toward a young homesteader named Luke Tanner, but Wade soon discovers the brands were changed by someone with expert knowledge—and Luke may have been framed.

As Wade investigates, he uncovers a secret organization of ranch owners stealing cattle from smaller outfits, blaming innocent settlers, and using hired killers to silence anyone who objects. The man directing the operation is Sheriff Roland Pike, Wade's former friend and the person who recommended him for the job.

Wade must decide whether he is still working for justice or merely serving the men who pay him.
