A contretemps with the Baron of Vez leads to Thibault's failed attempt to poach a deer from the Baron's land, but Thibault's wishes are unexpectedly answered when a black wolf that walks on its hind legs—and speaks!—delivers him the buck. The wolf explains that Thibault can have anything he desires, in exchange for just a few of his hairs.
