Sherlock Holmes hat durch Zufall in der New York Times erfahren, dass die New Yorker Polizei immer noch über den ungeklärten Brand in einer Textilfabrik ermittelt, bei dem über hundertfünfzig Näherinnen ums Leben gekommen waren, weil sie nicht aus dem Gebäude vor den Flammen fliehen konnten. Als Holmes vom Ehemann einer Frau, die noch mit Verletzungen im Spital liegt, darauf angesprochen wird, erklärt er sich bereit, den Unfallort zu inspizieren. Selbstverständlich verspricht er seinem Partner und Hausarzt Doktor Watson "hoch und heilig" während ihrer gemeinsamen Ferien keinen neuen Kriminalfall anzunehmen. Doch als Holmes in der verbrannten Fabrik ankommt, muss er entdecken, dass der Unfallort eigentlich ein Tatort ist, an dem die New Yorker Polizei nicht ganz unbeteiligt sein könnte.
