Texte fondateur du féminisme américain, cet essai de 1843 est exemplaire du rejet transcendantaliste de toutes les formes d’oppression (notamment celle des noirs), de tradition, de convention, d’institution (telle que le mariage) et de limite à l’accomplissement de chacun. Brouillant les frontières de genre, Fuller insiste sur la nécessité de repenser profondément la structuration traditionnelle de l’organisation sociale en « deux sphères », pour que les femmes puissent réaliser leur propre nature. Elle est animée de l’espoir que les hommes seraient à leur tour libérés et élevés par la libération des femmes.
