Virginia Woolfs essä »Hur skall man läsa en bok?« reflekterar över läsandet som en personlig erfarenhet och inte minst som en frihetsakt. Den ursprungliga texten skrevs som ett anförande på en flickskola i Kent, England, 1926. Woolf reviderade den sedan inför dess första publicering, i The Yale Review, oktober samma år. Den inkluderades senare i essäsamlingen The Common Reader: Second Series, som utkom 1932.
