Siddhartha has every advantage a spiritual seeker could want — a brilliant mind, a devoted friend, access to the greatest teachers of his age, and eventually a meeting with the Buddha himself. He walks away from all of it, convinced that enlightenment can't be handed down secondhand, and spends a lifetime testing that conviction through wealth, addiction, fatherhood, and finally the patient, wordless lessons of a river. Hesse's short novel compresses an entire spiritual autobiography into something closer to a parable than a plot.A cornerstone of 20th-century spiritual fiction that introduced generations of Western readers to Eastern philosophy on its own terms — still one of the most gifted books for anyone questioning what they've been told to believe.
