Dante's journey through the three realms of the dead: led by the poet Virgil down the circles of Hell and up the mountain of Purgatory, then guided by Beatrice through the spheres of Paradise, he meets the souls of popes and lovers, traitors and saints, and the great figures of Florence and antiquity. Henry Francis Cary's blank-verse translation, illustrated with the engravings of Gustave Doré. Its 135 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
