Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) schreef ruim honderdvijftig sprookjes, waaronder Het lelijke jonge eendje, Duimelijntje en De prinses op de erwt. Veel van zijn sprookjes hebben een symbolische betekenis en vaak een tragisch einde, zoals in Het meisje met de zwavelstokjes.
In 2005 werd wereldwijd de 200ste geboortedag van de Deense sprookjesschrijver Hans Christian Andersen gevierd. Andersen groeide op in Odense. Toen de jonge Hans 11 jaar was, overleed zijn vader, een arme schoenmaker. Het liefst had hij acteur willen worden, maar hij werd niet aangenomen bij de koninklijke theaterschool.
Andersen is het meest bekend geworden vanwege zijn sprookjes. Het verhaal van zijn leven legde hij vast in Het sprookje van mijn leven, waarin hij vertelt over zijn vele buitenlandse reizen en contacten met adellijke families en vorstenhuizen. Hij debuteerde in 1827 met het gedicht Det døende Barn (Het stervende kind). In 1835 werd zijn eerste bundel met sprookjes voor kinderen uitgegeven, een bewerking van traditionele sprookjes. Zijn latere werk bevat vooral zelf bedachte sprookjes (zogeheten cultuursprookjes).
