En "Clavijo" encontramos una doble ficción, porque la obra de Goethe está basada en un relato en el que el escritor francés Beaumarchais parte de una realidad vivida en primera persona para componer una historia en la que se entremezclan elementos reales y ficticios. Cuánto hay de verdad (que la hay, pues el viaje a España del escritor francés y el encuentro con Clavijo se produjeron) y cuánto hay de ficción es difícil de precisar, pues el principal interesado, Clavijo, no dejó testimonio de todo ello.
