Movido por unos principios inquebrantables, el joven William Crimsworth se ve obligado a ganarse la vida sin ayuda de nadie. Sus pasos le llevan a Bruselas, donde ejerce de profesor de inglés en un internado femenino y donde se debatirá entre dos mujeres de caracteres contrapuestos.

La primera novela de Charlotte Brontë ofreció a sus contemporáneos una historia demasiado sincera y espontánea para los cánones de la época. Es sin duda la obra que mejor refleja la personalidad de la autora. Por eso solo vio la luz de forma póstuma, en 1857.
