El último hombre da título a la novela utópica publicada por Mary Shelley en 1826, en la que retrata una sociedad futura que ha sido arrasada por una terrible plaga. El narrador, Lionel Verney, único superviviente de la enfermedad, recuerda los años finales de la existencia de la raza humana, cuyo fin había sido profetizado en la Cueva de las Sibilas hacía miles de años. Verney es, pues, quien con su narración de los acontecimientos va rellenando los huecos que no cubría la profecía, ayudando así comprender el desarrollo de los sucesos que condujeron al triste destino de la humanidad. El relato,que destila pesimismo y dureza, se ha interpretado como el lamento de la autora por la pérdida de sus seres queridos –sus hijos que nunca llegaron a la madurez, su marido Percy Shelley y su amigo y apoyo en la viudedad, Lord Byron–, así como el profundo cuestionamiento de los ideales revolucionarios y románticos de la autora. La obra fue acogida tras su publicación con grandes críticas y, al contrario de lo que sucedió con su Frankestein o el moderno Prometeo, tuvo que esperar a la segunda mitad del siglo xx para recibir el reconocimiento literario que merecía."
