In 1816, te midden van schrijversvrienden in Italië, schreef de negentienjarige Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley het horrorverhaal dat later zou uitgroeien tot de grondsteen van de sciencefiction en een van de bekendste romans aller tijden: Frankenstein. Dit is het verhaal van de excentrieke wetenschapper Victor Frankenstein, die bezeten is van de wens om een levend wezen te scheppen. Uiteindelijk slaagt hij erin, maar de mislukte creatie wil vervolgens zijn maker – en alles waar deze waarde aan hecht – vernietigen.
