Love and Other Theories

This novel had the potential to be great with its well-written, in-depth characters. The plot centers around high school girls adopting "the cool girl" concept to attract boys, deliberately avoiding labels to not end up hurt and abandoned. However, this results in a lack of meaningful communication within the main character's (MC) friendship group. Conversations remain surface-level to avoid deep attachments, leading to an absence of real discussions that could have enriched the story. By the third act, when their approach inevitably backfires, I anticipated a significant reveal or confrontation, but it never came. Moreover, while the MC's internal dialogue and message are well-developed, leaving no unanswered questions about her, the narrative misses crucial opportunities for big moments among characters. Such moments could have provided deeper insights into their thoughts and addressed the audience's lingering questions, adding layers to the narrative. Consequently, the story feels unfulfilling, akin to being kept waiting for a meal at a new restaurant by subsisting on bread rolls, only to be informed five hours later that the restaurant is closing.
