In *Old Times in the Colonies*, Charles Carleton Coffin presents colonial American history as a sequence of vivid human episodes, tracing European settlement, Indigenous encounters, religious communities, frontier conflict, and the gradual formation of political institutions. Written for younger readers but grounded in the popular historical tradition of the nineteenth century, the book combines documentary impulse with dramatic narration, moral reflection, and an accessible, anecdotal style. Its illustrations reinforce Coffin's effort to make the past visually immediate, while also revealing the period's patriotic, Protestant, and nation-building assumptions about colonization and American origins. Coffin (1823–1896) was a journalist, author, and Civil War correspondent whose experience in eyewitness reporting shaped his talent for converting large historical processes into memorable scenes and personal stories. He wrote extensively for juvenile and general audiences, seeking to cultivate civic knowledge and national character through history. His perspective reflects the post–Civil War era's desire to establish a coherent American past, even as modern readers may critically examine its treatment of Indigenous peoples, colonial power, and cultural difference. This illustrated edition is recommended to readers interested in nineteenth-century historical writing, the development of American civic literature, and the ways children's books construct national memory. It is especially valuable when read both as a lively introduction to colonial narratives and as a historical artifact whose omissions and emphases invite thoughtful comparison with contemporary scholarship.
