Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher, published Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch in 1795. In the book, Kant puts forth concepts that have since been associated with institutional, commercial, and democratic peace. The Treaty of Basel during the French Revolution gave Kant the idea to consider how both self-interest and international collaboration might put a stop to war.
