Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was een Amerikaanse auteur van romans en kinderboeken. Onder moeders vleugels is haar meest bekende werk, dat ze gedeeltelijk baseerde op haar eigen jeugdervaringen met haar drie zussen. Na meerdere verfilmingen verschijnt in 2019 een nieuwe Hollywood-versie.
Jane Austen (1775-1817) werd geboren in Hampshire, Engeland. Haar ouders waren George en Cassandra Austen, ze had zes broers en een zuster. In haar romans kwamen vaak familieomstandigheden voor, zoals die in haar eigen familie voorkwamen. In haar werk spelen de onderlinge relaties van de personages een grote rol, of de relaties tot een bepaald thema. Ze had zes broers en een zuster. Op een scherpzinnige wijze ontleedt ze de verschillende karakters, en brengt hun diepere motieven meedogenloos naar buiten. Ze laat op een subtiele, ironische manier haar minachting zien voor eigenschappen als domheid, egoïsme en snobisme.
Ondanks een aanzoek is Jane Austen nooit getrouwd. Zij stierf op 41-jarige leeftijd. Haar eerste boek, Northanger Abbey, schreef zij op 20-jarige leeftijd, maar werd pas na haar dood in 1817 uitgegeven. Sense and Sensibility (Verstand en Gevoel) werd in 1811 uitgegeven, gevolgd door Pride and Prejudice (Trots en Vooroordeel) in 1812. Later volgden Mansfield Park, Emma en Persuasion (Overtuiging).
De romans van Jane Austen hebben al generaties lezers geboeid
en gecharmeerd. De thema’s die zij begin 1800 beschrijft zijn al
eeuwen gelijk gebleven en worden met een diepgaand inzicht en
een warm gevoel voor humor afgeschilderd.
