Sky Island

e-book

First published in 1912 ā€˜Sky Islandā€™ is the sequel to L. Frank Baumā€™s earlier novel ā€˜The Sea Fairiesā€™. We re-join courageous Tiny Trot and her friend, the old sea captain Bill Weedles in Southern California. The pair meet a young boy named Button Bright whose magical umbrella has taken him far from home. The trio decide to take a trip with the magic umbrella but mistakenly end up on the mysterious Sky Island where all is not as it seems. A childrenā€™s tale full of magic and the absurd, fans of Baumā€™s ā€˜Wizards of Ozā€™ series will recognise some of the characters in this fantastical story.

Lyman Frank Baum (1856 ā€“ 1919) was a prolific and well-known American writer. He is best known for his famous series of modern fairy tales set in the imaginary land of Oz. The first of the books, ā€˜The Wonderful Wizard of Ozā€™ is widely considered to be the first true American fairy tale and was the basis for the hugely popular 1939 classic musical ā€˜The Wizard of Ozā€™ starring Judy Garland. Born and raised in New York, Baum held a range of jobs including as a poultry farmer, clerk, and storekeeper before pursuing his talent for writing at the age of 41. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, as well as over 40 other novels and over 80 short stories. He died in California in 1919.
