The two youths cross the Pacific to Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia: sugar plantations, a Maori village, the goldfields and the strange animals nobody in Boston believes in. Knox travelled with letters of introduction and used them; the shipboard chapters read like a log. The volume was written when Australia was still six separate colonies. Its 365 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
