Two boys travel through Mexico to Campeche and Yucatán — the pyramids, the mines, the volcanoes, the railways being built — with the history of the conquest told along the road. Knox wrote it in the 1880s when Americans were beginning to invest heavily south of the border. The Aztec chapters are drawn from Prescott and are the best part. Its 378 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
