On a forgotten back road in rural Wyoming, the streetlamps are failing... And every time a lamp goes dark, a body appears beneath it.

Former investigator Grant Dawson has seen patterns before, but nothing like this. The killer only strikes where darkness is absolute, leaving behind no witnesses, no tracks, and a chilling signature drawn in the snow: a smiley face.

Grant is pulled into the case by Sheriff Marla Briggs. Their only leads? A county maintenance worker whose name keeps surfacing in all the wrong places, and a witness whose fear may be hiding more than the truth.
