A simple wager. A deserted house. And something waiting in the dark.
In The Middle Toe of the Right Foot, Ambrose Bierce delivers a masterclass in psychological horror—where tension builds not through spectacle, but through what cannot quite be seen… or explained.
When a man accepts a challenge to spend the night alone in an abandoned house, the silence begins to shift. Shadows stretch. Time slows. And an unseen presence makes itself known in the most subtle—and deeply disturbing—ways.
Spare, precise, and hauntingly effective, Bierce’s storytelling lingers in the mind long after the final moment.
Expertly narrated by Ken Kowalik, this chilling short story is brought to life with an atmosphere of quiet dread and creeping inevitability.
