The Taker: Book One of the Taker Trilogy

From the author of The Hunger—hailed by Stephen King as “deeply, deeply disturbing, hard to put down”—comes a hauntingly atmospheric novel that blends dark romance, immortality, and betrayal in a mesmerizing tale of love that refuses to die.

True love can last an eternity...but immortality comes at a price...

Working the midnight shift in a rural Maine hospital, Dr. Luke Findley expects nothing more than frostbite cases and the occasional domestic dispute—until Lanore McIlvrae enters his ER under police escort. Beautiful, enigmatic, and suspected of murder, Lanny captivates Luke instantly. As she begins to tell her story, he is drawn into a confession that stretches back more than two centuries.

Her tale begins in the early 19th century, when St. Andrew, Maine, was still a Puritan settlement. As a child, Lanny becomes consumed by her love for Jonathan, the founder’s son, and will sacrifice everything to be with him. What she gains is eternal life—but at a terrible cost. Bound by an immortal pact fueled by alchemy, lust, and obsession, Lanny is condemned to endure centuries of loss and longing.

Now, two hundred years later, the possibility of healing—and salvation—may lie with Luke. Part historical novel and part supernatural thriller, this spellbinding story explores how unrequited love can sustain the soul, blind the heart, and ultimately destroy both.

Very well-written novel although I felt no connection to the MC I felt a surge of motivation,(albeit sluggish motivation), to listen. To what kept me going was the need to learn the ending so i can finally be taken for surprise amd maybe some i dont know suspense?! I figured there had ro be a reason for this story to continue for another two books. We learned of the Mc and her backstory. We've followed her through the naivety of her youth growing up as a purist in an isolated rural town and becoming infatuated dressed as love with her best friend—for the sake of remaining spoiler-free—only for her “love” to lead her to being ostracized and excommunicated to Boston by her father. We then follow her to Boston where she’s taken in by her arotracates whose favorite pastimes include debauchery cutthroat competetion between eachother for the attention. Of the leader and all forms of “sin”. We see her as a purist reformed into an immortal immoral whore and by golly 🤗 it was magical.✨ LOL. Come on what am i supposed to follow that up with. It was interesting i kept notes?! No, it seemed to be a whole lot of filler to me for a trilogy that's genre is horror. Maybe they forgot to include the word psychological before horror because of anything this book did a number on my psyche. 😮‍💨🫠 the only pro i can think of is the reason i stuck it out. Sometimes sequels are the books to really up the pacing and get the story started. There have been few but the reviews are saying otherwise. We shall see if i will make thr leap. Look out for the sequel's review section and you just might see me there.🫡
