Fairy tales from Romania, Serbia, Lithuania, Japan and Africa, gathered when Lang's collections had outgrown Europe: the finest liar in the world, the envious neighbour, the underground workers, Dwarf Long Nose and the Nunda, eater of people. The translations were made largely by Leonora Lang and a circle of women whose names appear only in the preface. The Violet has the least familiar stories of the series and the most unsettling of them. Its 57 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
