Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

"Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H'."

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

A Magical Beginning: Everything Great About the First Harry Potter Book 1. A Perfect Introduction to a New World The first book is the reader’s gateway into J.K. Rowling’s enchanting world of magic. It’s filled with awe and discovery, seen through the eyes of Harry, a relatable underdog who doesn’t know he’s special—until he finds out just how magical he truly is. 2. Incredible World-Building From Diagon Alley to the Hogwarts Express, from the Sorting Hat to the moving staircases, Rowling builds a world that feels both whimsical and real. Everything is rich with detail, yet easy to imagine. 3. Memorable Characters Each character feels distinct and alive. Harry’s courage, Hermione’s brilliance, Ron’s loyalty—they form a trio that’s instantly likable. Even side characters like Hagrid, Dumbledore, and McGonagall shine with personality. 4. A Story of Hope and Belonging Harry starts as a neglected orphan living under the stairs, but quickly finds a place where he belongs. That journey—from isolation to community—is deeply moving and empowering. 5. Perfect Blend of Humor and Heart The tone strikes a wonderful balance: magical and fun with just enough depth to feel real. Fred and George’s jokes, Hagrid’s lovable clumsiness, and the misadventures of learning magic all bring warmth and laughter. 6. Timeless Themes Good vs. evil, friendship, bravery, identity, and the power of love—these are universal themes handled in a way that resonates with readers of all ages. 7. A Gripping Mystery The story isn’t just magical—it’s a clever mystery. The Philosopher’s Stone, the forbidden corridor, Snape’s suspicious behavior—it all builds suspense and rewards readers with a satisfying reveal. 8. A Strong Moral Center Dumbledore’s wisdom (“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”) and the book’s moral lessons (like standing up to your friends being just as brave as standing up to enemies) give it real emotional weight. 9. Accessible Yet Rich Prose Rowling’s writing is clear and engaging, perfect for young readers yet filled with enough cleverness and wit for adults. It’s easy to read but far from simple. 10. Laid the Foundation for a Cultural Phenomenon This one book ignited a global movement—turning millions of kids into lifelong readers, inspiring movies, merchandise, theme parks, fan fiction, and so much more. 11. Iconic Moments From getting his Hogwarts letter, to buying his wand at Ollivander’s, to the Sorting Ceremony, and the final confrontation with Voldemort—there are scenes that have become cultural landmarks. 12. Brimming with Wonder Every page is bursting with imagination—wizard chess, chocolate frogs, the Mirror of Erised, invisibility cloaks. It captures the joy of discovery like few books can.

    J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling is the author of the enduringly popular, era-defining Harry Potter book series, as well as several stand-alone novels and a crime fiction series written under the pen name Robert Galbraith. After the idea for Harry Potter came to her on a delayed train journey in 1990, she plotted out and wrote the series of seven books and the first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in the UK in 1997. Smash hit movie adaptations followed, with the last of the eight films, Deathly Hallows Part 2, released in 2011. The Harry Potter books have now sold over 600 million copies worldwide and been translated into over 80 languages. They continue to be discovered and loved by new generations of readers. To accompany the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling wrote three short volumes for charity: Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos; and The Tales of Beedle the Bard in aid of her non-profit children's organisation Lumos. One of these companion volumes inspired the Fantastic Beasts film series, begun in 2016, with screenplays written or co-written by Rowling. Also in 2016, she collaborated with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany to continue Harry's story in a stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. J.K. Rowling's stand-alone novels include The Casual Vacancy, which was published in 2012. Writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, she is the author of the highly acclaimed 'Strike' series, featuring private detectives Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott. In 2020 she returned to publishing for younger children with her fairy tale The Ickabog, which was initially serialised for free online for children during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Christmas Pig, an adventure story about a boy's love for his most treasured toy and how far he will go to find it, was published in 2021 and was a bestseller in the UK, USA and Europe. As well as receiving an OBE and Companion of Honour for services to children's literature, J. K. Rowling has received many other awards and honours, including France's Legion d'Honneur, Spain's Prince of Asturias Award and Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen Award. In 2020, Jo received a British Book Award, recognising Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as the most important book of the last thirty years. She supports humanitarian causes through her charitable trust, Volant, and is also the founder and president of Lumos, an international children's charity fighting for every child's right to a family by transforming care systems around the world.
