Boken handler om det tyske flygeresset under første verdenskrig, Manfred von Richthofen. Fra januar 1917 fløy han en rødmalt Fokker, og britene ga ham tilnavnet Den røde baron. På samme tid ble han sjef for egen jageravdeling og skjøt ned over 80 britiske fly før han selv ble drept i en luftkamp over Frankrike. Boken er basert på Richthofens egne dagboknotater. Siste kapittel er skrevet av Richthofens bror.
