Koranen är islams heliga bok. Den utgör enligt muslimsk uppfattning Guds oförvanskade ord som uppenbarats till profeten Muhammed genom ängeln Gabriel. Detta ägde rum vid många skilda tilläfllen, med regelbundna och iblang långa intervaller, med början år 610 enligt kristen tideräkning, då Muhammed var fyrtio år, och fram till hans död 632. K. V. Zetterstéen gjorde sin numera klassiska och uppskattade översättning av Koranen redan år 1917.
