Following the death of Mr Dashwood, his wife and three daughters are forced to leave their estate and live in a small cottage in Devon. Austen's novel follows the sisters through love, loss, and heartbreak, until they find their way towards a different ending.
Jane Austen began Sense and Sensibility when she was barely 20. It was published 16 years later, in 1811, at her own expense; the only clue to the novel's authorship was the inscription 'By a lady'.
