Sherlock Holmes ist bei der reichen Gräfin Olitzky auf Besuch. Diese erzählt Holmes von einem allwissenden Schachautomaten. Es heißt, man könne dem Automaten alle Fragen stellen und dieser könnte sie beantworten. Das einzig Beunruhigende daran war, dass, wo immer der Schachautomat vorstellig war, es kurz darauf einen Unglücksfall innerhalb der Familie gab. Deshalb bittet die Gräfin Sherlock Holmes um dessen Anwesenheit, wenn am selbigen Abend der Schachautomat in ihrem Hause vorgestellt wird. Holmes kommt dieser Bitte gerne nach und versucht sein Möglichstes, das Unglück von der Gräfin abzuwenden...
