Complete and unabridged, with 54 full-page plates by Edvard Munch, William Henry Davis and Thomas Baines. The Great Trek from a Boer woman's side: Suzanne Botmar's daughter loves an English castaway, and the family goes north with the wagons to Natal — to Retief's embassy, Dingaan's kraal, and the massacre at Weenen. Haggard was in the Transvaal for the annexation and heard the Trek from the people who had made it; Swallow is his Boer novel, and the English are not the heroes of it. Fifty-four plates, from Munch's seated figures to Ducros's Maltese grottoes, trace the European eye on land and sea across two centuries of the Trek's world.
