Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Willem van Nieulandt II, Johannes Lingelbach and Frederic Edwin Church. A shipwrecked Englishman is carried to Peru before the conquest and taken for a god by the Chanca; the Incas make a Virgin of the Sun of the woman he loves, and the penalty for touching her is known to everyone. Haggard went to South Africa at nineteen and helped raise the Union Jack over the Transvaal; here he wrote the Andes from the chronicles, and the priesthood is the antagonist, as usual with him. Fifty-eight plates of coastal wrecks and classical ruins, from Rubens to Church, give the New World romance its old-world weather.
