Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Vasily Polenov, Vasily Perov and Valentin Serov. A life of Tolstoy by the Frenchman who corresponded with him as a young student and got a long letter back that changed his life. Rolland writes as a disciple but not a blind one, and the account of the last flight from Yasnaya Polyana is very fine. This edition adds Bernard Miall's translation and a gallery of 60 plates, among them paintings by Ivan Kramskoi, Vasily Perov, Ivan Shishkin and Alexei Savrasov.
