Hemingway es un gran novelista, pero quizás sus mejores cuentos sean superiores a sus novelas. "Un lugar limpio…" es un excelente ejemplo. De este cuento, James Joyce dijo: "Es uno de los mejores que se haya escrito jamás". Hemingway refleja en él, la soledad existencial del ser humano en el personaje del viejo que bebe hasta altas horas de la noche y su relación con los dos camareros que solo quieren volver a su casa.
