Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) var en amerikansk forfatter, filosof og talsmann for friluftslivet. Thoreau var utdannet ved Harvard, men avsto fra diplom grunnet diplomavgiften. Etter dette arbeidet han delvis som lærer, delvis på familiens pennefabrikk, samt skrev dikt og poesi. Thoreau regnes som en av de tre store klassikerne i eldre amerikansk litteratur. De to andre er Herman Melville og Walt Whitman. Thoreau har visse likhetspunkter med dem begge, men samtidig skiller han seg ifra dem ved at han aldri - bortsett fra diktene - utga skjønnlitteratur. Thoreaus bror døde tidlig, og som følge av dette valgte han å bo alene med foreldrene. Mellom 4. juli 1845 og 6. september 1847 foregikk hans ensomhets-eksperiment i hytta ved innsjøen Walden. Oppholdet er skildret i denne boken "Walden – Livet i skogene".
