El relato gira en torno a la relación de amistad entre Stephen Jones y George Rogers, dueño de un museo privado de cera especializado en la representación de lo grotesco. Dicha relación degenera cuando Jones se burla por primera vez de Rogers, poniendo en juicio su cordura por hablar constantemente sobre ritos y sacrificios a dioses ancestrales. Para poner fin al escepticismo de Jones, Rogers le invita a pasar una noche en el museo, ante lo cual el otro acepta.
