El 9 de abril de 1948, en la esquina de la avenida Jiménez con carrera séptima en Bogotá, cae herido de muerte el líder liberal Jorge Eliecer Gaitán. En ese momento la turba enfurecida arrastra por las calles el cadáver de Roa Sierra destrozado a punta de golpes de palos y varillas. Y en cuestión de horas, el centro de Bogotá es un infierno. Años después, un grupo de teatro universitario en la década de los 70 va a recrear estos hechos. 1948 hace una lectura crítica, desde nuevas perspectivas ideológicas y artísticas, de la historia nacional. A través de -una obra dentro de una obra-, muestra la frustración de una generación que en la caída del líder popular ve retratado su propio destino.
