Money - and the social effects of having it or not - is too big a theme in people's daily lives to be ignored by literature. The writers gave the most varied interpretations and looked from the most different angles to the human relationship with money - but the final thought is always up to the reader.

James Joyce, en av vår tids största författare, föddes i Dublin 1882. Han lämnade hemlandet som 22-åring för att bedriva sin litterära verksamhet i exil, och under resten av sitt liv flyttade han runt i Europa medan han arbetade på att föreviga sin födelsestad i ord. Hans verk inkluderar Dublinbor (1914), Ett porträtt av författaren som ung (1916), Ulysses (1922) och Finnegans Wake (1939).
Ulysses ansågs så kontroversiell att den första upplagan inte kunde publiceras i England utan gavs ut av amerikanska Sylvia Beach som innehade bokhandeln Shakespeare &Co. i Paris till Joyces 40-årsdag 1922.
Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880) förnyade romankonsten, inte minst med Madame Bovary, men även med verk som Salammbô, Hjärtats fostran, Den helige Antonius frestelser och den ofullbordade berättelsen om Bouvard och Pécuchet.
