Creatures of the Night (Boxed Set Edition) surveys the nocturnal imagination across centuries, gathering Gothic terror, supernatural romance, adventure fantasy, folklore, and fin-de-siècle sensation. Its range extends from medieval lays and early vampire lore to Victorian penny dreadfuls, colonial uncanny tales, and twentieth-century weird fiction. Vampires, spectres, shape-shifters, and morally ambiguous outsiders emerge not merely as monsters but as figures through whom writers test desire, empire, mortality, class anxiety, and the unstable boundary between civilisation and wilderness. The contributors form a remarkably broad international and historical constellation. Medieval French narrative, Romantic Gothic experimentation, Irish ghost fiction, French fantastic literature, British popular serials, and American pulp horror meet in a volume shaped by the long afterlife of the Gothic. Figures associated with foundational vampire writing stand beside chroniclers of sensational popular fiction and masters of the uncanny, while travel writing, folklore, and adventure traditions deepen the collection's cultural reach. Together, these voices reveal how the night creature continually changes form in response to shifting literary markets, national traditions, and social fears. Ideal for students, scholars, and devoted readers of the fantastic, this boxed set offers an unusually capacious encounter with supernatural literature's evolving archive. It invites comparison across genres and eras, rewarding readers with both historical perspective and the immediate pleasures of dread, wonder, and narrative surprise.
