The first of the Apostolic Fathers, Clement was the fourth Roman pope, who served in the late first century AD. His only known genuine extant work is an epistle to the church at Corinth in response to a dispute in which certain presbyters of the church had been deposed. It is one of the oldest extant Christian documents outside the New Testament and is considered to be the earliest affirmation of the principle of apostolic succession.
