Charlotte Perkins Gilman fue una de las pensadoras feministas más influyentes de Estados Unidos a fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Su experiencia como escritora, conferencista y reformadora social, así como su reflexión sobre la dependencia económica de las mujeres, alimenta directamente esta obra. Autora también de El papel amarillo, Gilman comprendió la opresión femenina como un problema estructural, no meramente doméstico.
