Este libro recoge una selección de escritos y cartas de Thomas Jefferson que cubre más de cincuenta años de vida activa, hasta su muerte en 1826. En este período ocupó un sitio central en la política de la nueva república: representante de su estado (Virginia) en la convención de 1776, cuando redactó la Declaración de Independencia, gobernador de Virginia y coordinador de la comisión de reforma legal de dicho estado, embajador en París, ministro y vicepresidente de los primeros gobiernos, y a partir de 1800, tercer presidente de Estados Unidos. Los escritos que son parte de dicha actividad política que resultó decisiva en la configuración de Estados Unidos (la Declaración de Independencia; la separación de Iglesia y Estado; la oposición a Hamilton y los federalistas con la defensa de la autonomía de los estados) constituyen hitos centrales en su trayectoria. Junto con Franklin, Washington y Hamilton, Jefferson es una de las figuras de referencia en el establecimiento de la versión estadounidense de la cultura política de la modernidad.
