Treatments include oiling, heating, and radiation, each altering the gem’s visual quality but sometimes fading over time. Composite and coated gemstones are complex to identify and often require special tools. Unfortunately, imitation gemstones made of glass are widespread and often passed off as genuine, leading to unknowing purchases. Despite the visual similarities, imitations lack the physical and chemical properties of natural gems.
